Fincastle County, VA
In 1772, the Virginia Assembly created Fincastle County from western Botetourt County. Fincastle county included western Virginia and lands in the current states of Kentucky and West Virginia. Settlers in what is now Kentucky found it increasingly difficult to govern with the seat of governent so far away and they pushed to become a separate county. Thomas Jefferson introduced legislation to divide Fincastle into three new counties and Patrick Henry, Governor, signed the bill into law. Fincastle County was dissolved on December 31, 1776, and the area became Montgomery, Washington. and Kentucky counties.
